American country music artist Steve Wariner is coming to ֱ
Grammy-award winning singer/songwriter/storyteller and multi-instrumentalist Steve Wariner will perform live in concert on Friday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium at Savannah’s Armstrong Campus of ֱ.
ֱ’s Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Center opens, bridges connections between past and present
The collective cultural memory of the Gullah Geechee people, descendants of enslaved West Africans who inhabited the barrier islands of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and northern Florida, has survived through oral histories and distinctive arts, music, dance, foodways and language.
However, few within the Gullah Geechee community today, which is estimated to be a population of 1 million, can speak the African Creole language or tell the stories of their ancestors who are credited with influencing southern and American culture.
In response, ֱ has established the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Center to aid in the preservation of this fluctuating culture, honor the myriad contributions made by Gullah Geechee people and provide educational resources for faculty, students and the surrounding community.
An Eagle Educator is the 2022 Georgia Teacher of the Year
The 2022 Georgia Teacher of the Year is ֱ alumna Cherie Dennis (‘10) who has lived and studied across the nation from Washington, D.C., to San Francisco, California, and settled in Savannah, where she began a career in teaching more than 12 years ago.
Get a peek into ‘The Digital Age’ through senior exhibition on Armstrong Campus
“The Digital Age,” a senior exhibition presented by ֱ’s Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art, will showcase works by graduating students Faith Manuel, Ferris Smith, Rori Brown and Shantel DeLosAngeles. The exhibition will run weekdays from Sept. 15 to Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fine Arts Gallery on ֱ’s Armstrong Campus in Savannah. A reception will be held Oct. 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission to the exhibition is free and open to the public.
ֱ celebrates ‘40 Under 40’ Class of 2021
The ֱ Alumni Association “40 Under 40” Class of 2021 was recognized at a ceremony on Friday, Sept. 24, at the JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District.
The annual honor recognizes young alumni who have made significant strides in business, leadership, community, educational or philanthropic endeavors.
ֱ’s College of Education creates research center dedicated to youth advocacy
For more than 30 years, ֱ’s National Youth Advocacy and Resilience (NYAR) Conference (formerly the National Youth-at-Risk Conference) has served as an epicenter of information sharing and advancement for the support of youth facing challenges across the nation. The conference recently led to the creation of the NYAR Research Center, an interdisciplinary facility that is housed in ֱ’s College of Education to further enhance the conference’s efforts in supporting youth across the nation.
New scholarship fund supports military spouses at ֱ
A new scholarship fund designed specifically for the spouses of military service members has been established at ֱ.
Thanks to support from The Landings Military Family Relief Fund Inc., up to $3,000 is available per recipient, per semester, for a select number of spouses of active duty service members, who have completed one term as a full-time student and is in good academic standing with the University. Recipients can attend any ֱ Campus in Savannah, Hinesville or Statesboro.
College of Engineering and Computing programs receive reaccreditation
Three bachelor’s programs in the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing have recently received reaccreditation status.
The Bachelor of Science in Construction degree program received reaccreditation from the American Council for Construction Education. David Scott, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction, and David Williams, associate dean for students and curriculum, co-chaired the accreditation team.
Additionally, the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET has awarded reaccreditation to the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree programs.
Faculty who contributed to the accreditation process include Gursimran Walia, Ph.D., department chair of Computer Science, Hong Zhang, Ph.D., Yiming Ji, Ph.D., department chair of Information Technology (IT); Cheryl Aasheim, Ph.D., assessment team chair for IT, and David Williams, Ph.D., associate dean for Students and Curriculum, and chair of the ABET accreditation team.
Celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month with ֱ
Celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, with ֱ’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. This year’s month-long celebration, which highlights the history, culture and many contributions of the Latino and Hispanic communities in the U.S., will feature a series of brown bag lectures and lunches, movies, discussion panels, study abroad information sessions, soccer, fiestas, food and more.
