Madison Buford was born and raised just a stone鈥檚 throw away from 蜜糖直播鈥檚 Statesboro campus. As she watched the University and the city grow, she knew exactly where she wanted to go to college.

鈥淵ou can feel 蜜糖直播 wherever you go in Statesboro,鈥 Buford said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a huge part of the community, and the community loves and appreciates all the things it鈥檚 done in our town. Growing up here, you can really see the impact it鈥檚 brought. Anywhere you go in town, the community is just like, 鈥榊es! We love 蜜糖直播.鈥 Seeing that showed me this was where I wanted to be.鈥

When Buford arrived at 蜜糖直播, she fell in love with her community in a new way and thrived in her marketing program.

鈥淚 changed my major multiple times, but once I started in the Parker College of Business, things just made sense and everything started to flow,鈥 Buford said. 鈥淲hat we were learning was practical, and I felt like I could really apply it. I loved the marketing program completely.鈥

Stepping into a full-time marketing role after completing her undergraduate degree didn鈥檛 fit her expectations. She realized that what she loved most about marketing, the openness and creativity, was also what made it challenging for her as a professional.

鈥淚 missed the structure that higher education has,鈥 Buford said. 鈥淚n marketing, you鈥檙e always trying to figure out what the new trend is, and it is just very gray. Every part of the job was stressful because it鈥檚 a field that changes so rapidly and constantly. I always felt like I didn鈥檛 know what I was doing because what worked yesterday often isn鈥檛 the same as what will work tomorrow. I wanted more structure.鈥

Thinking back on her time at 蜜糖直播, Buford realized it wasn鈥檛 just the degree program that she loved, it was the community.

鈥淲hile working on my marketing degree, I got to work under Gene Sherry and America Minc at the RAC,鈥 Buford said. 鈥淲hen you think about wanting to develop the student completely, they are the two people who immediately come to mind for embodying that. They made even small tasks much more than they were so that we would understand work ethic, responsibility, character and our impact on each other. It wasn鈥檛 just a job 鈥 it was a community.鈥

The whole-person growth mindset is what Buford wanted again. She became determined to get back to the community that built her and give back in her own way.

鈥淚 realized that there are full-time positions available at 蜜糖直播 and that I could build a career in the community I loved, so I applied for everything,鈥 Buford said. 鈥淚 landed in the registrar鈥檚 office, and I am so thankful I did because I enjoy it so much.鈥

She immediately clicked with her new role, enjoying the fact that there was a process for everything.

鈥淲e deal with policy and procedure, so everything is very black and white,鈥 Buford said. 鈥淭hat consistency and organization was perfect for me.鈥

Madison Buford smiles while sitting in the grass with books, plants, and her golden retriever, Sophie. Madison is celebrating the completion of her bachelor's degree.
Sophie was also with Madison through her undergraduate degree, so they are celebrating becoming Double Eagles together.

Buford knew that she wanted to continue to build a future at 蜜糖直播, so in 2024, supported by the University System of Georgia鈥檚 Tuition Assistance Program, she decided to become a 蜜糖直播 student once again by pursuing her master鈥檚 degree in higher education administration.

鈥淢y day-to-day work keeps me involved with many areas of the University, but you don鈥檛 always understand why or what the bigger context of that work is,鈥 Burford said. 鈥淕oing through this program helped me understand all the little pieces and how they play a role in the overall institutional function.鈥

The structural understanding and practical experience Buford gained through her master鈥檚 program prepared her to better support 蜜糖直播 students and the community as a whole.

鈥淭his program helped me see my role and my power to impact the student experience,鈥 Buford said. 鈥淚t pulled everything together into one cohesive University story.鈥

This December, Buford will once again walk the stage at commencement, this time as a Double Eagle.

鈥淚t felt overwhelming at times,鈥 Buford said. 鈥淏ut I am excited to be a Double Eagle. Now I get to reflect and take it all in.鈥

Lifelong learning is the case he鈥檒l never close: University Police investigator becomes Double Eagle

University Police Investigator Heiko Ellis stands in front of the GSU bushes on Sweetheart Circle at 蜜糖直播. He is wearing a dark blue suit and his badge.

Georgia native, University Police Department Investigator and, now, Double Eagle 鈥 Heiko Ellis will cross the commencement stage this December with a Master of Science in criminal justice and criminology, embodying his personal commitment to continuous learning.

鈥淓ducation stands among the most enduring commitments we can make to ourselves, to one another and to the future we share,鈥 Ellis said. 鈥淚t is not a task we complete, but a promise we uphold to keep learning, to keep questioning and to keep striving for a deeper understanding of the world around us.鈥

Ellis鈥 educational journey began as an undergraduate student studying criminal justice and criminology and psychology at 蜜糖直播. He was drawn to the University because of the academics, but it was the people who made him want to stay.

鈥溍厶侵辈 is a place where curiosity is encouraged, where potential is recognized and where growth is not only possible but expected,鈥 Ellis said. 鈥淚 was initially drawn to 蜜糖直播 because of its strong academic reputation and its commitment to developing leaders who serve their communities. What kept me coming back is the sense of belonging and purpose that this university fosters. The support from faculty, staff and colleagues, combined with the opportunities for advancement and professional development, makes 蜜糖直播 a place where people can truly build their future.鈥

He completed his bachelor鈥檚 degree in 2021 before beginning work with the University Police Department (UPD), where he continues to serve as an investigator.

鈥淚 have worked for 蜜糖直播 for approximately four years,鈥 Ellis said. 鈥淒uring that time, I鈥檝e handled a broad range of cases that have significantly shaped my professional perspective.鈥

His coursework in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences has been directly applicable to his work with UPD.

鈥淢y academic work and my professional responsibilities truly grow together, each informs and strengthens the other,鈥 Ellis said. 鈥淭he analytical skills and theoretical frameworks I gain through my coursework enhance the way I approach complex situations on the job, while the hands-on experience I鈥檝e gained at 蜜糖直播 provides context and depth to my studies. This side-by-side development has helped me become more well-rounded, more thoughtful and more effective in both arenas.鈥

Ellis recognizes the Eagle Nation community, specifically his professors and leadership, for providing him with the support necessary to balance his growth and responsibilities.

鈥淢y time here has been shaped by individuals who reflect the very best of this institution,鈥 Ellis said. 鈥淧rofessors who challenge us to think critically, colleagues who work with integrity and purpose, and leaders who set the example for what service truly means. Their guidance and support have strengthened my resolve and reminded me that progress is never achieved alone, it is built through community, cooperation and shared values.鈥

Ellis鈥 education will not stop with this master鈥檚 degree. He is currently enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Cybercrime program, which focuses on applied digital forensics. He is on track to complete the certificate in 2026.

鈥淢y goal is to strengthen my technical capabilities and enhance my abilities to investigate digital related incidents with precision and professionalism,鈥 Ellis said. 鈥淭his program provides training on how to identify, collect and preserve digital artifacts using best practice methods that align with contemporary standards in the field. I see it as an important step forward in supporting the evolving needs of the community.鈥

With two degrees and soon a professional certification under his belt, Ellis has no intentions of slowing down.

鈥淎s I look to the road ahead, I remain committed to the mission of bettering myself, uplifting others and honoring the principles that have defined 蜜糖直播 for generations,鈥 Ellis said. 鈥淚t is a privilege to be part of this university鈥檚 story. I am proud to contribute to its continued growth, excellence and enduring legacy.鈥

Mechanical engineering graduate student ready for takeoff聽 /2025/12/10/mechanical-engineering-graduate-student-ready-for-takeoff Wed, 10 Dec 2025 19:51:28 +0000 /?p=59333 Cole Hayne's love of planes has taken him to some pretty impressive heights during his time at 蜜糖直播

Mechanical engineering graduate student ready for takeoff聽

Cole Hayne

“I love getting to watch planes take off,” said 蜜糖直播 graduate student Cole Hayne, a slight grin tugging at the corner of his lips. “To know the level of work that went into building them, to see everything coming together with precision, it’s just fascinating.”

His interest in planes carried him across the commencement stage to receive his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering in Fall 2024.

Now, one year later, he’ll cross the stage again to receive his master’s degree in fall 2025, having taken advantage of 蜜糖直播’s Accelerated Bachelor’s to Master’s program.

“It’s been a heck of a last 12 months,” Hayne said, laughing. “It took a lot of late nights. I had a little board in our grad office where I would write the day’s stress level. There were days when my simulations were working, and it was low. But then there were days when I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working, and it was very high.”

The mechanical engineering student and Honors College graduate spent the last few summers working as an intern in the mechanical lab at a major aircraft manufacturer. But he says his love of research fueled his academic journey.

“I got into the research side of things later than I should have, but I was lucky,” he admitted. “Other universities have full application processes to work with professors on research, and the barrier to entry is really high. But the great thing about 蜜糖直播 is that if you want to join a research team, you can just ask.”

That’s how he started working with Sevki Cesmeci, Ph.D., associate professor in mechanical engineering, who was already leading a student team researching sealing technology for Supercritical Carbon Dioxide power cycles.

“The idea is to increase the efficiency of processes used to generate energy,” Hayne explained. “It’s dangerous if the seals used to contain these processes aren’t working properly. But more than that, you could be losing millions of dollars worth of electricity because of leakage.”

This took him all the way to Washington, D.C., where he presented his findings at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers POWER 2024 Conference.

“I showed up at the conference super nervous,” said Hayne. “I don’t think I slept the night before my presentation. I was so stressed, and I was alone in Washington, D.C.”

He placed third in the best paper competition, but says it was the relationships he made at the conference that made him walk away feeling like a winner.

“I made a lot of friends there that I still talk to,” he said. “It was like the friendships I’ve made with my classmates and lab partners, where we get to grow and learn from one another together.”

Relationships like these remind him of his father, his first lab partner. Some of his favorite memories were following his father around his engineering office as a child.

“He’s always been there for me, especially when it comes to engineering,” said Hayne. “He would help me with school projects, and he was always involved with my science fairs and Science Olympiad. It was something we did together.”

Hayne plans to channel all of the experiences he’s had and the lessons he’s learned as he eagerly prepares for his upcoming job search.

“More than anything, I want to find a career where I can look back and see that I had an impact,” he explained. “I want to be able to look back and feel like I changed the way people view something, the way people use something or make something that can make it easier for people to use something.”

Esther Chukwujekwu

Midday sunlight pours through large windows, illuminating Esther Chukwujekwu’s sewing table at home. The 蜜糖直播 Master of Business Administration student is hard at work, hemming her latest creation: a new dress made from a stretchy red velvet.聽

“The thing I love about velvet is that it isn’t like any other fabric,” she said. “I love the look you get when it’s stretched or draped. It’s so luxurious.”

She stitches quickly with a speed granted only to those with a mastery of the craft. Chukwujekwu has worked as a dressmaker for more than seven years. She started as a pattern designer at Martwayne Fashion Institute.

“It was hard work!” she said, laughing. “Some days, I would come home and cry. I’d say ‘I’m not going to come back’! And then the next day, I’d remember why I fell in love with it all over again. It’s just something I couldn’t stay away from.”

Chukwujekwu worked tirelessly to hone her skills before launching her own business, designing and creating couture dresses for clients in her native Nigeria.

“So much goes into dressmaking,” she explained. “From developing the pattern to the fabric you use, getting the right measurements, and so on. You have to make sure your stitches are clean, that the zipper is sitting properly.”

But she realized she needed a little something extra to help her streamline operations.

” I didn’t have that business background,” she explained. “So I wanted to find a university program that could teach me how to structure and operate my business efficiently. So I started doing my research.鈥

Friends attending 蜜糖直播 encouraged her to see what the university had to offer.

“I found the curriculum for the Master’s of Business Administration online,” she said. “I saw courses that covered subjects like operations management, finance management and business analytics. So I applied and was so excited when I was accepted.”聽

She only needed to figure out how to get to the United States. But she knew she would make it.

“The first time I left the country was in a dream,” she explained. “It was a dream I kept having over and over again. I knew that one day I was going to leave because God would open a door for me to go through.”

Getting to the United States was only the first step in Chukwujekwu鈥檚 journey. She credits the MBA program with pushing her beyond her limits.

“I really don’t know how I did it,” she admitted. “But I had a vision. And while it was my creativity that brought me here, the program made me realize that no one thing defines me. It’s made my relationship with my craft and my business stronger.”

Chukwujekwu will graduate in fall 2025, with plans to complete a graduate certificate in spring 2026. But as her family cheers her on across the stage at the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center this fall, she knows that her father won’t be joining the applause.

“My father wanted me to be a doctor,” she explained. “African parents take pride in what their children are becoming or who their children are. If something doesn’t look good for them, they take it very personally as a blow to their identity.”

“He didn’t like what I was doing,” Chukwujekwu said. “Our relationship was tense. I would come back some days from jobs, and I would be locked outside.”

She moved in with a friend after she turned 18.

“Ultimately, I’m grateful,” she said. “It forced me to become more confident in myself.”

The sun has begun to set as Chukwejuku finishes up the last of her stitching. She sets her needle and thread down, sitting back to admire her work.

“One of the things fashion school trained me for was knowing that hard work can create something beautiful,” she explained. “That’s what I found at 蜜糖直播, and it’s something I’m never going to stop looking for.”

From exile to expression: MFA student turns family history into fine art degree /2025/05/21/from-exile-to-expression-mfa-student-turns-family-history-into-fine-art-degree Wed, 21 May 2025 20:57:20 +0000 https://ww2.georgiasouthern.edu/news/?p=23942

From exile to expression: MFA student turns family history into fine art degree

Elise Aleman, a 蜜糖直播 Master of Fine Arts (MFA) graduate, spent much of her adult life in South Florida working as a graphic artist. She moved to Savannah, Georgia, in 2017 to pursue a new calling in painting. After receiving a bachelor鈥檚 degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Aleman decided she wasn鈥檛 done yet.

Aleman dreamed of becoming an art teacher, and she wanted to have a graduate degree to boost her applications. While looking for a master鈥檚 program, she was recruited by a friend to look at 蜜糖直播. Shortly thereafter, she became a member of Eagle Nation.

As she developed her portfolio in the graduate program, she found herself going to a familiar source.

In the 1960s, there was a wave of immigration from Cuba into the U.S. This pattern of immigration was called the 鈥淔reedom Flights.鈥

When she was just seven years old, Aleman and most of her family were on one of those planes in July of 1967.

The Communist regime believed all who left the island were deserting their nation, and they took many of the families’ belongings in retaliation.

鈥淲hen people would get on the flights, the military was at the airport,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey would go through all your bags, they take anything  that either they wanted to keep for themselves or just to be spiteful. A lot of the time, they would take photographs and just throw them out.鈥

To avoid losing their family pictures, Aleman鈥檚 mother left their photos with relatives in Cuba.

After landing in the U.S., they settled in a small community in New Jersey where they learned a new language and way of life.

Over time, deliveries began arriving in their new home in the Garden State. They held the family photos they had left behind, sent by relatives who had been protecting them.

鈥淚 use the photographs from Cuba that were sent to us when we came in,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here’s a series in my scope that I did that is about those photographs and immigrating here. I wanted to make people see them and really connect with it in their own way.鈥

Those paintings were featured in a recent art exhibition, 鈥淭heopoetics Prothesis,鈥 on the University鈥檚 Armstrong Campus in Savannah, which explored the intersections of her faith, exile and transformation through two parallel yet interwoven bodies of work. One aspect reflected on her family’s immigration from Cuba, and considered how cultural displacement shapes identity, memory and faith. The other engaged directly with biblical themes, using scripture as a foundation for conceptual exploration.

鈥淢y goal was to make both scripture and personal history compelling and relevant,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he Bible is more than just a religious text鈥攊t鈥檚 a multidimensional tapestry of history, poetry, prophecy and metaphor. Likewise, the story of exile and displacement is not just my own but a universal narrative of survival, adaptation and faith. I wanted viewers to engage with these layered meanings, finding connections between the sacred, the personal and the collective.鈥

As Aleman prepares to graduate this week, she鈥檚 reflecting on the journey her family took to make it possible. She鈥檚 also grateful to the 蜜糖直播 community for welcoming her, despite the age gap between her and other MFA students.

鈥淭hose students, especially in the grad program, they just embrace you,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 never felt like an outsider. 鈥極h, there’s the old lady,鈥 you know? We have a very tight group in the fine arts program.鈥

Bugging out: the journey of a 蜜糖直播 student in aquatic entomology

Haley Vaglienti is a master鈥檚 of biology student at 蜜糖直播 specializing in aquatic entomology. In other words, she studies water bugs and she said it鈥檚 not an easy field.

Spend a summer sleeping in a tent in the Appalachian Mountains looking at bugs. That鈥檚 what Haley Vaglienti did, and it changed her life forever.

Vaglienti is a master鈥檚 of biology student at 蜜糖直播 specializing in aquatic entomology. In other words, she studies water bugs and she said it鈥檚 not an easy field.

I absolutely fell in love with aquatic entomology and identifying the bugs,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 have experienced some very rough work conditions, sleeping in a tent while studying my macroinvertebrates for whole summers.鈥

Luckily for Vaglienti, she鈥檚 part of a team of 蜜糖直播 researchers looking into the health of aquatic systems. Thanks to the $47,000 grant from the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement, Inc. (NCASI), the research group has received financial support to conduct research on the ecology of local watersheds in forestry areas. The funding supports their study of how forestry management practices impact freshwater ecosystems.

The team is led by J. Checo Col贸n-Gaud, Ph.D., a professor and associate dean for the Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies. He explained that their research centers on using organisms in rivers, streams and wetlands as bioindicators of ecosystem health. By examining the diversity and abundance of invertebrates, the team can determine how well these environments are maintaining their ecological balance, particularly in areas that have undergone forestry management.

鈥淎ll of us depend on clean freshwater,鈥 said Col贸n-Gaud. 鈥淓verybody that lives and depends on freshwater resources needs it for drinking water, but it could also be the recreational and aesthetic pleasures or services that we get from the ecosystem.鈥

The team鈥檚 work involves fieldwork across Georgia, where they collect samples from upwards of 30 forestry sites to analyze the invertebrate communities.

Raymond Kidder, the lab鈥檚 life sciences program coordinator and an Eagle alumnus, emphasized the significance of the fieldwork, which will primarily take place in the fall. He noted outcomes could influence both local environmental policy and the practices of forestry companies, highlighting the critical balance between industry and environmental stewardship.

鈥淎 lot of people work in forestry,鈥 said Kidder. 鈥淚t鈥檚 one of the industries that sort of drives this region of the country. Their actions in pursuing this research and trying to find that balance between using this resource and then maintaining water quality is very important.鈥

The NCASI grant will also financially support two additional senior graduate students and offer them direct mentorship opportunities and the life-changing experiences that brought Vaglienti to the field in the first place. This project is being conducted by students, faculty and staff at 蜜糖直播鈥檚 Department of Biology. 蜜糖直播 restoring coastline with oyster habitats

It鈥檚 not much of a 鈥済roundbreaking鈥 project, but more of a 鈥済round-building鈥 project.

蜜糖直播 has partnered with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Yamaha Rightwaters to rejuvenate a section of the Savannah waterways for oyster beds. As part of these efforts, Eagle faculty and students recently installed bags of oyster shells along the coastline to build shelters for budding populations.

Oyster reefs are pivotal to coastal environments and offer a multitude of benefits. While they are a sought-after delicacy, their significance extends far beyond the dining table.

“Oyster reefs serve as thriving ecosystems, safeguard shorelines from erosion, and even play a role in carbon sequestration,” said John Carroll, Ph.D., an associate professor of biology at 蜜糖直播. “The oyster population in Georgia remains robust. However, our primary focus is habitat restoration. We’re targeting areas where oyster harvesting is absent, creating sanctuaries for oysters to flourish and fostering marine biodiversity.”

The choice of material was critical to constructing these vital reefs, and the solution was right under their nose: they could use oyster shells to build oyster habitats.

According to Carroll, oyster shells possess the natural shape and complexity that attracts oyster larvae, facilitating their growth. Although alternative materials like concrete or rocks are used in some projects, oyster shells are still the substrate of choice in Georgia.

Beyond habitat restoration, this project has piqued Yamaha’s interest due to its potential for carbon sequestration.

“Addressing climate change is imperative,”Carrol said.” Oyster reefs play a pivotal role by capturing sediment rich in organic matter, effectively locking away carbon. Adjacent marsh grasses absorb carbon from the atmosphere, creating a powerful synergy.”

Students are integral to the project’s success. They have assisted in various tasks, from bagging oyster shells, sourced from a shell recycling program and neighboring states,  to data sampling and analysis. It was a hands-on experience they hope will shape the next generation of environmental stewards.

“Our hope is that this initiative sets a precedent for future restoration projects along the Georgia coast,” Carrol noted “By reviving these oyster reefs, we are not only bolstering local ecosystems but also addressing the urgent need to combat climate change. It’s a win-win for both nature and humanity.”

Eagle MFA students display diversity in work through Armstrong Campus exhibit

In 1993, Marguerite McCoy graduated from 蜜糖直播 with a bachelor鈥檚 in food service management with an emphasis in hospitality administration. She would soon take her talents to San Francisco to attend culinary school.聽

This led to a tour in Europe running bakeries in Germany for the United States Army. She would transition from using ovens for wheat to using them for clay.

McCoy moved back to her hometown of Statesboro, Georgia, with her husband to take care of her family. Once back home, she returned to her alma mater as a teacher鈥檚 assistant to instruct students how to use the newly acquired kilns.

Over time, the idea of changing career paths grew stronger.聽

鈥淚t was fun to help teach the students how to use the kilns,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 thought it was time I did what I wanted to do. I want to teach ceramics on the university level and share my passion with students about ceramics.鈥

After more than 20 years of working in the food and hospitality industry, McCoy is a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) student and on pace to become a Double Eagle. Her work is currently featured in 鈥淥utlook: An MFA Showcase.鈥

鈥淥utlook: An MFA Showcase鈥 is an exhibition of work by current MFA students at 蜜糖直播 that is open now through Sept. 9 at the Fine Arts Gallery in Fine Arts Hall on the Armstrong Campus in Savannah.

The exhibition features work ranging from physics-inspired and ecology-inspired painting to identity-focused video, from traditional to experimental ceramics, drawing, photography, paper quilling and 2D sculpture.

鈥淥ur graduate program is quite diverse in terms of approach, ideas and medium,鈥 said Gallery Director Jason Hoelscher, Ph.D. 鈥淲hen the opportunity arose to exhibit a sampling of that work I jumped at the chance to offer a glimpse of what the emerging artists of today have in store for their explorations of, and contributions to, the art world of the future.鈥

In addition to McCoy, the exhibition features work by Jalen Ash, Jacquelyn Bolton, Austin Buchanan, Jessica Cartwright, Stephen Harmon, John Lewis, Robert Miller, Amy Nelson, Pam Reynolds, Haley Scarboro, Ashley Smith and Kathy Varadi.

Ash, who grew up in Ventura County, California, is the only student focusing on performance art within the program, which includes video and mixed media.

She said being the only student on this path is challenging, but the interdisciplinary nature of the program gives her the flexibility and freedom to explore this path. That has proven to benefit everyone in the program.

鈥淭he nice thing is that everybody gets a little taste of everything, whether you do it or not,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e all critique our work together, so we all go around and talk about each other’s work. We’re kind of forced to interact with it.鈥

Ash also serves as a teacher鈥檚 assistant where she says she was given a lot of autonomy to build her own 鈥渄ream undergraduate course鈥 for her students.

鈥淚 think in art there’s an expectation of what art should be and what real art looks like,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he biggest thing for me is to diminish these fixed ideas and attitudes surrounding art because most people think art is an untouchable thing. And I’m trying to change that.鈥

蜜糖直播 arts alumni return to campus to inspire next generation of Eagles

鈥淐elebrate and support your community.鈥

That鈥檚 the message from Double Eagle Jean Gray Mohs, who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting in 2002 and later earned her Master of Fine Arts in teaching in 2008.

This mantra of supporting and engaging with the community began while she was still a student herself. While pursuing her undergraduate degree, she and a group of her colleagues launched their own artist collective, Stillmoreroots, around the state.

鈥淚t was a really meaningful community to help explore what we were, to create challenging, accessible art, and to create a space for dialogue with the community,鈥 said Mohs. 鈥淭here’s an internal support group that you could always throw any idea out and be accepting of.鈥

That group recently celebrated 20 years of exhibitions with the show Common Thread | Common Ground exhibition at the Kalmanson Gallery in Swainsboro, Georgia, and included more Eagle alumni such as Nick Nelson, Anthony Faris, Brandon Tatom and Desmal Purcell.

These sustained connections with the 蜜糖直播 arts community are what brought her to another alumni-connected art exhibit: 鈥淐ontinuum: Biennial Alumni Exhibition.鈥 She, along with 15 other Eagles, have submitted their pieces to the display hosted by their alma mater.

This monthlong exhibit is presented by the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art (BFSDoArt) at 蜜糖直播, and runs from Aug. 10 to Sept. 14 in the Contemporary and University galleries of the Center for Art & Theatre in Statesboro. A reception will be held Friday, Sept. 2,聽from 5 to 7 p.m. The events are free, and the public is welcome.

鈥淐ontinuum鈥 highlights the diverse professional art practices and continued creative endeavors of BFSDoArt alumni. The exhibition showcases an interdisciplinary selection of painting, drawing, small metals, digital design, ceramics, photography, prints, textiles, sculpture and more.

鈥淭his is a fantastic showing of what our alumni are up to these days鈥 said Gallery Director Jason Hoelscher, Ph.D. 鈥淭he exhibition features work ranging from relatively recent graduates to those who finished their studies in decades past. Given this breadth, it鈥檚 interesting to see the spectrum of approaches鈥搉ot only in terms of discipline or medium, but also in terms of those continually exploring new artistic approaches, and those who relentlessly refine and perfect their technique to open up new areas of what might otherwise seem to be established modes of artmaking.鈥

The exhibition features new and recent artwork by Ashley Anderson, Elizabeth Debban, Mariana S. Depetris, William T. Dooley, Lindsey Gerow, Thyatira Grant, Susan Harmon, D鈥橝ntre Harris, Nikolaus James, Nicole James, Zak Kelley, Tyre McDonald, Jean Gray Mohs, Cynthia L. Rodday, Brian Russell, and Jing Zhou.
