Graduating student had ‘wild’ time at ֱ
Carson Moore never wanted to go to college.
Moore, a graduating senior with a keen interest in animals, will receive a BS in biology from ֱ at Paulson Stadium on Dec. 13.
Growing up, Moore worked in a horse barn for twelve years and volunteered for a mini-zoo in her hometown of Macon, Georgia. She did not want to leave her work with animals behind to go to college.
ֱ unveils new master’s and doctoral degrees in environmental science
ֱ’s College of Science and Mathematics (COSM) now offers a master’s degree in environmental science and will begin recruiting for the inaugural class of doctoral students in environmental science for the fall 2023 entering class. The post-graduate degrees supplement the recently approved bachelor’s degree in sustainability science. Housed in the James H. Oliver, Jr., Institute for Coastal Plain Science, every department in the college will play a role in this interdisciplinary trio of programs.

A ֱ professor and graduate were among the distinguished honorees at the recent 17th annual Regents’ Scholarship Gala that raised more than $625,000 to support and provide need-based scholarships for University System of Georgia (USG) students across the state.
ֱ grad student researches different planting treatment effects on Tybee Island sand dunes
The sand dunes of Tybee Island have taken a beating in recent hurricane seasons. ֱ biology graduate student Shannon Matzke is researching ways to combat the destruction of the dunes for her restoration project by collecting data on the effects of various planting techniques to see which technique best increases the longevity of the dunes.
ֱ SARC researching salt marsh habitat loss with new aquaponics garden
Salt marshes in south Georgia are in constant need of restoration due to rising sea levels. ֱ graduate student Alexander Gregory is leading a project on the Armstrong Campus to address the loss of marsh habitats by researching Spartina alterniflora, the dominant plant in Georgia salt marshes.
ֱ immunology expert to give presentation, hold Q&A on Coronavirus vaccines for ‘Science on Tap’ series to build vaccine confidence
ֱ professor of biology and immunology expert, Traci Ness, Ph.D., will host a presentation and virtual Q&A session titled, “COVID Vaccines Unmasked: Questions and Answers from an Immunologist,” on the coronavirus vaccines. The virtual event is part of the College of Science and Mathematics “Science on Tap” series and is free and open to the public.
ֱ professor receives University System of Georgia Hall of Fame Faculty Award
Associate Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, Arpita Saha, Ph.D., was chosen unanimously as the winner of the 2021 Felton Jenkins Jr. Hall of Fame Faculty Award for the University System of Georgia.
College of Science and Mathematics signs memorandum with Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia
The ֱ College of Science and Mathematics (COSM) has signed a memorandum of understanding to partner with the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia. The partnership will provide girls with access to opportunities in STEM education.
